SAFETY CORNER - JULY 2026

Human Performance and the 20-20-20 Rule

After years in the field, I know that even the best of us can develop tunnel vision while performing a task. On construction sites, conditions are constantly changing. Materials are moved, equipment is relocated, temporary power is modified, and other trades enter the work area. If we're not paying attention, it's easy to miss those changes.

At Five Star Electric, we understand that even seasoned workers can overlook something. That's why we don't just rely on reacting after an incident. We focus on simple habits that help us stay aware in the moment.

One habit we use is the 20-20-20 Rule. Every 20 minutes, we take 20 seconds to look around the 20 feet surrounding us. It might sound simple, but those few seconds can help you spot hazards you didn't notice when you started.

What was safe at the beginning of a task may be different half an hour later. Maybe overhead work started nearby, temporary power has been rerouted, material has been delivered, or another trade has moved into your work area. By stopping to take a fresh look, we can recognize these changes before they become incidents.

This rule reminds us that even experienced electricians aren't immune to distractions, complacency, or routine. Taking a step back, even for a few seconds, helps us refocus and maintain situational awareness throughout the workday.

In the end, building a strong safety culture isn't about reacting after something goes wrong. It's about developing habits that help prevent incidents before they happen. The job will always be there. Taking 20 seconds to reassess your surroundings may be what ensures you're there tomorrow to finish it.
